18 June 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an off-duty officer unnecessarily involved himself in a dispute between his friend, Mr V, and the friend's former partner, Ms S, in Christchurch in November 2015. When the dispute escalated, the officer used excessive force against Ms S.


13 June 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that it is unlikely two Ashburton officers planted evidence by placing a man's wallet in a bag containing drugs. However, lapses in good practices created a situation where it was difficult for these officers to corroborate their version of events.

11 June 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a custody officer used excessive force when he attempted to restrain a man in custody in April 2017. Police also failed to respond appropriately to an injury to the man caused by the use of force.

6 June 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police did not use excessive force when restraining a young person who, along with three others, had been arrested in Manurewa, Auckland. However, the Authority did identify other concerns, and found three of the four arrests were unlawful.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police as an organisation, as well as individual officers, failed in their legal duty of care when a man in custody died after a drug overdose in November 2017.

23 May 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer should not have tried to stop or pursue a car thought to contain young people in Palmerston North on 28 May 2018. The pursuit ended when the fleeing car crashed into a ditch. The driver, Mr X (aged 15) and passenger, Ms Z (aged 12) were killed. Another passenger (aged 16) was seriously injured.

9 May 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority released a report today finding that an Auckland man who laid a complaint with the Authority was not pressured by Police into withdrawing that complaint.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority released a report today finding that an officer was not justified in shooting at a stolen Police car in Murupara.


15 March 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority and the New Zealand Police have jointly conducted a review of the fleeing driver environment and the application of existing policy. This report endorses the current policy approach to fleeing driver events but highlights eight recommendations to enhance Police understanding and application of the policy, including changes to the way these events are handled, the training given to officers and the way the events are recorded and investigated. Additionally, it highlights the need for further research to understand why some drivers flee.


14 March 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police generally complied with policy when a man was taken into custody and while there attempted to harm himself in December 2017.
