The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police generally complied with policy when a man was taken into custody and while there attempted to harm himself in December 2017.

On Friday 15 March Judge Colin Doherty, Chair of the Independent Police Conduct Authority, will hold a media conference on the release of the joint report with NZ Police into fleeing driver events.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police officers were justified in pursuing a vehicle believed to contain a wanted offender on 11 March 2018. The pursuit ended when the fleeing driver overtook a truck, colliding with an oncoming vehicle. The occupants of both vehicles were killed on impact.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that while the use of road spikes was an appropriate tactical option, an officer should not have deployed them to stop a fleeing driver near Puhoi on 28 February 2018. The officer deployed the road spikes too early, causing injury to an innocent member of the public.

7 February 2019

The Independent Police Conduct Authority and New Zealand Police have been working together on a joint thematic review of fleeing driving events, to better understand the fleeing driver environment and Police management of these events.

The report will be publicly released on 15 March 2019. There will be media stand ups by both organisations with details to be announced closer to the time.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that the force used against a man who was arrested in Gisborne on 2 January 2018 was lawful but poorly executed. The Authority investigated the incident after the man complained to Police, having sustained a fractured nose and eye socket.
