2 July 2020

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that removal of keys from the ignition of a patrol car when an officer got out of it, would have prevented theft of the car and two Glock pistols.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police did not comply with policy and failed in their duty of care to a detainee who attempted suicide while in a Court cell. He lost consciousness and died several days later when his life support was turned off.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a sergeant inappropriately touched a woman and used demeaning and sexualised language while driving her home from a work related conference in March 2018.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer's use of force was unjustified and unreasonable when he kicked a man and aimed a pistol at his head following a pursuit in April 2018.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that force used by a Police officer during the arrest of a 13-year-old boy was justified (though the officer could have taken more care to avoid injuries the boy sustained) until the point that the officer punched the boy in the ribs during handcuffing.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that, in general, Police conducted a fair and thorough investigation into a complaint against Detective Inspector Kevin Burke (DI Burke). While there were some practical failings, these did not compromise the integrity of the investigation.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer was unjustified in using pepper spray on a man who he believed had failed to stop driving when signalled to do so.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that there is insufficient evidence to support an allegation that a Police officer punched a woman in the face after her arrest on 14 April 2019. However, facial injuries the woman sustained were likely caused when the officer restrained her in the back of a Police car after she assaulted him by kicking him in the face.
