On 20 April 2023 the Independent Police Conduct Authority published ‘The Review: Policing of the Protest and Occupation at Parliament 2022’. 21 complaints about specific incidents during the protest required either a specific investigation or further enquiries to determine what action should be taken. We have now completed our investigations into these complaints and can provide a summary of our findings, which have already been reported to the complainants and officers involved.

12 December 2023

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police were justified in arresting a woman for obstruction and resisting arrest, in Wellington on Friday, 14 October 2022. Officers used low-level force on the woman following her arrest, which was reasonable and proportionate given the circumstances. 

5 December 2023

 The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police used unjustified and excessive force when arresting a man at Rotorua on 13 September 2021.

30 November 2023

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police unlawfully entered a man’s private property to serve Family Court documents on the Court’s behalf.

28 November 2023

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer at Taupō used unjustified and unnecessary force during the arrest of a 17-year-old female.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police dog handler’s decision to use his dog to apprehend a 12-year-old male in Te Awamutu on 4 January 2023 was justified.

21 November 2023

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that two Police officers were justified in shooting at a man who held three civilian drivers at gunpoint and hijacked their cars while trying to avoid arrest. The man surrendered after the second officer’s shot hit and injured him.

 The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer was justified in shooting a man twice with a sponge round.

7 November 2023

 The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that Police were unjustified in their decision to withdraw a charge against a man pertaining to a fatal motorcycle accident at Rotorua on 29 January 2019.

2 November 2023

 

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that two officers were justified in their decision to shoot at Mr Fakalago to save a woman’s life in Newlands on 7 June 2022.
