The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a senior officer improperly involved himself in the prosecution outcome for a man who had been charged with assault in Northland on 14 June 2020.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Custody Officer used excessive force when restraining a detainee in Police cells, and officers did not provide the detainee with appropriate care while in custody overnight.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer in Northland was justified in using a Police dog to stop a man trying to avoid arrest.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that officers were justified in using reasonable force to transfer a man between cells when he refused to cooperate and became aggressive. However, some of the force used was excessive and the man was injured.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer was not legally justified in arresting a youth for breaching a bail condition in Porirua on 4 October 2020. The officer neglected to consider the youth’s age, which meant he could not lawfully arrest the youth for his first breach of a bail condition. The officer was also unjustified in using a Police dog to make the arrest.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that a Police officer in Northland was justified in using a Police dog to stop a man trying to avoid arrest.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer’s use of force when arresting a 14-year-old boy in March 2019 was unjustified. While the arrest was lawful, it was undesirable and could have been avoided.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer was not justified in arresting a man who was seen urinating on a roller door in the Tauranga CBD, and therefore all subsequent uses of force by that officer were unlawful.

On 8 November 2020, Police were justified in using force to effect the arrest of a youth for a suspected family harm incident and breaching a protection order in Christchurch.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that an officer in Auckland used force that was unjustified and excessive during the arrest of a 14-year-old male (Mr X).
