Examination of Police actions leading up to death of male in Bay of Plenty

28 January 2026

The Authority oversaw a Police Critical Incident investigation following the death of a male in the Bay of Plenty District.

Police found no information to suggest that their dealings with the male several hours before his death were inappropriate. The Authority is also of the view that appropriate action was taken by officers based on information that was available to Police.

A subsequent Police pursuit of the male was well coordinated and managed appropriately, with suitable resources deployed based on the threat the male was believed to pose. The Authority agrees that officers demonstrated significant restraint and composure in their dealings with the male following the pursuit. The officers could neither have anticipated nor reasonably prevented the rapidly unfolding sequence of events that led to the man's death.
