Allegation of excess force in the Bay of Plenty District

1 April 2026

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation that a man was assaulted by officers while being arrested following a fleeing driver event in the Bay of Plenty District. The man was taken to a Police station where he requested medical attention for injuries he had allegedly sustained. After being examined by ambulance staff he was transported to hospital, where he remained for several days.

Police completed a criminal investigation but were unable to substantiate the man’s claims or corroborate the account of a witness. During their enquiries, Police discovered that the man’s injuries were likely the result of an assault he had been subjected to in the days before his arrest.

No further action was taken in respect of the officers concerned. The Authority is satisfied with this outcome.
