Complaint that officer established checkpoint to harass ex-partner

24 September 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an officer’s actions after their ex-partner complained the officer deliberately established an alcohol checkpoint in the vicinity of their child’s school in order to obtain the complainant’s vehicle registration.

Police investigated and found that the officer was assigned to the checkpoint by a supervisor. It was one of several predetermined checkpoints that the officer manned during their shift. The complainant was not stopped by the officer, who immediately notified their supervisor that they had seen their ex-partner.

Police determined that no further action was necessary.

We agree with this outcome and suggest that officers be alive to and raise potential conflicts that may arise during the course of planned deployments. Similarly, Police supervisors should take appropriate steps to mitigate risks of the sort encountered in this case.
