Allegation of excessive force by Authorised Officer not upheld

22 September 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an incident where an Authorised Officer grabbed a detainee by the head and forced them to the ground in the corridor of a custody unit.

The officer said he acted because the detainee was behaving in a threatening manner and had shoved him against a wall. This phase of events was not captured on CCTV, while the officer’s actions were. The Police investigation found that the officer genuinely believed that the detainee posed a threat and did not take any disciplinary action against the officer as a result.

The Authority is satisfied with the Police investigation and accepts the outcome reached.
