Police employee prosecuted for involvement in fraud against large retail chain

17 September 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification alleging that a Police employee was involved in mass fraud offending while working in his previous job.

Police conducted a criminal investigation and found the Police employee was heavily involved in the fraud scheme before he was employed by New Zealand Police. Police found evidence that the employee assisted others to complete the fraud and continued to do so after being employed by Police. The employee was involved in offending totalling $33,752.

Police charged the Police employee with eight charges of accessing a computer system for dishonest purposes under section 249 of the Crimes Act 1961. He pleaded guilty.

Police also undertook an employment process and determined the employee breached the Code of Conduct and Police Values. He resigned before this process was completed.
