The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint that an officer made inappropriate comments about the complainant’s family during a traffic stop, causing her to feel uncomfortable and drive home.
The officer followed the woman back to her house, impounded her car and arrested her for failing to remain stopped at the traffic stop.
The woman also complained the officer had no grounds to impound her car, made disrespectful remarks to her partner, and further unprofessional comments about her while she was at the Police Station.
The Police investigation found the officer had lawful grounds to enter onto the complainant’s property, arrest her, and impound her vehicle. While Police found no evidence to support the allegation that unprofessional comments were made at the traffic stop or towards the complainant’s partner, Police concluded the officer made unprofessional comments towards the complainant while she was at the Police Station. These comments were in breach of the Police Values and were addressed through an employment process.
The Authority is satisfied that Police undertook an appropriate investigation and agrees with the conclusions reached.
