Fleeing youths assaulted by Auckland City Police officers

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into allegations that several youths were assaulted by Police officers after the stolen car they had been travelling in came to a stop.

Police helicopter footage of the incident shows that the youths surrendered and offered no resistance as they got out of the stolen car. However, In the course of their arrest, one youth was struck to the back of the head before being taken forcefully to the ground, where they were punched and kneed to the face. A second youth, who was lying prone on the ground with their hands behind their back, received knee strikes to the upper body and was struck to the head area with a hammer fist-style strike. A third youth had their jersey pulled over their head before being kneed in the shoulder area.

Three officers were charged with assault following a criminal investigation. One officer pleaded guilty, while the remaining two were found guilty following a Judge alone trial. All officers were discharged without conviction.

Police commenced an employment process at the conclusion of Court proceedings. The Authority is satisfied with the outcome of the employment process.
