Officer failed to notify when pursuing fleeing vehicle

2 October 2025

The Authority oversaw an employment process in respect of an officer who did not notify the Police Emergency Communication Centre when deciding to pursue a vehicle after it had failed to stop.

The officer only pursued the vehicle for a short distance, before deactivating the lights on their patrol vehicle and slowing to the posted speed limit. The officer continued on the road for a few more kilometres and found that the vehicle had crashed into a bank. The officer then informed the Communication Centre of the incident. One of the occupants sustained a head injury and was transported to the hospital.

Police found that the officer breached their fleeing driver policy by failing to notify the Communication Centre at the time they decided to pursue the vehicle. Police notified the Authority of the incident and then finalised the employment process for the officer.

The Authority is satisfied with the employment process carried out by Police and agrees with the outcome reached.
