Waitematā officer investigated for perjury

1 October 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into allegations that a Police officer lied about being trained to use radar equipment and issued 252 infringement notices for speed infringements detected by radar, despite not being certified to use this technology.

The Police investigation found there was sufficient evidence to charge the officer with perjury, on the basis that they asserted at a Court hearing they were a qualified radar operator despite knowing this was not true.

At the conclusion of these criminal proceedings the officer was found not guilty of perjury. Police also undertook an employment process.

The Authority agrees Police appropriately investigated this matter and reached a reasonable outcome.
