Investigation into alleged dangerous driving

22 May 2025

The Authority oversaw an investigation into an allegation an officer drove dangerously while responding to a suspected burglary. The officer was alleged to have driven at 188km in an 80 km/hr high crash zone.

The matter was reported by another officer who was a passenger at the time. Police determined the alleged speed would not be justified in the circumstances and it was in excess of the legal exemption to the road rules available to Police when conducting urgent duty driving.

Police charged the officer with dangerous driving, however the charge was latter withdrawn by the Crown Prosecutor due to the evidential and public interest tests no longer being satisfied.

Police considered additional evidence provided by the subject officer during the subsequent employment process and determined the allegation could not be substantiated on the balance of probabilities.

The Authority is satisfied Police have appropriately considered this matter.
