Off-duty officer acquitted of assault in Wellington

24 June 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint alleging that an off-duty officer and his associate assaulted a man in Cuba Street in the early hours of 23 January 2022.

It was alleged that the officer became involved in an altercation with the man, during which the officer punched him in the face causing him to fall to the ground. This was followed by two further punches. The man was rendered unconscious. Police were called to the scene and arrested the officer and his associate.

The officer was charged with injuring the victim and he pleaded not guilty to the charge. Following a trial in July 2024, the officer was acquitted.

Police then undertook an employment process and made adverse findings about the officer’s conduct. We agreed with those findings.
