Undesirable off duty behaviour by Police recruit

23 June 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into allegations that a Police recruit assaulted an acquaintance and a friend while intoxicated the weekend before the recruit was due to start at Police College.

The recruit had been in town with friends before heading to a house to continue drinking. An argument started that resulted in the recruit slapping their acquaintance in the face several times and punching their friend in the nose. Nearby residents called Police.

Police considered a criminal investigation, but there was insufficient evidence to consider charges as neither victim wanted to make a formal complaint.

Police completed an employment process and found that the recruit had breached Police Values and the Code of Conduct.

The Authority agrees with these findings and with the outcome.
