Unjustified force used during the arrest of a male in West Auckland

18 June 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification alleging that a Waitematā District Police officer used excess force during the arrest of a male in December 2023.

The officer then failed to comply with instructions not to discuss the incident with other officers involved while it was being investigated.

Police conducted a criminal investigation which resulted in the officer being charged with Common Assault. He pleaded guilty and was discharged without conviction.

Police completed an employment process, finding the officer had breached Police Policy and the Code of Conduct.

The Authority agrees with these findings.
