Off-duty Counties Manukau Police officer breaches Police policy and Code of Conduct

10 June 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an incident involving an off-duty Police officer. The officer saw an unknown man drive a van onto their driveway. Unbeknownst to the off-duty officer, the man was disqualified from driving and was trying to hide from Police. The off-duty officer was concerned about the man’s actions and intentions and decided to get into their personal vehicle and follow him as he drove away.

When the man stopped at another address, the off-duty officer approached the man to ask why he had driven onto their property. When the man refused to answer, the conversation became heated and the off-duty officer showed the man their Police identification.

The following day, the off-duty officer and family members visited the driver’s address and intimidated him, requiring an apology for his actions.

Police completed an employment investigation and found that the off-duty officer had breached Police Policy and the Code of Conduct.

The Authority agrees with this finding.
