The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation that a Police officer had called the complainant on several occasions and made threats towards them following the complainant’s separation from their partner. The complainant alleged that the officer was in a relationship with their ex-partner and that the officer had threatened to run the complainant over and kill them.
A preliminary investigation determined that the complainant’s allegations could not be substantiated. The complainant had been contacted by Police, but these calls were not made by or on behalf of the officer concerned. The calls were legitimate enquiries in respect of matters concerning the complainant. Also, there was no information to support the claim that the officer was in a relationship with the complainant’s ex-partner.
However, it was established that the officer had accessed the Police database and checked the complainant and their ex-partner. These checks were not for a legitimate work-related purpose.
Police found that the officer had breached Police policy. The Authority is satisfied with the investigation completed by Police and the employment outcome reached.
