Police investigation into officer’s misuse of Police database

4 August 2025

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation an Auckland District officer conducted unauthorised queries on the Police database. Police became aware of the officer’s inappropriate use of their system after the officer conducted a non-work-related search on the database in front of his supervisor.

The Police investigated and identified 14 queries conducted by the officer relating to Police staff, prospective employees, recruits and their associates. Police found 11 of these queries were not for work-related reasons and breached Police policy and the Police Code of Conduct. Police were satisfied the remaining three queries were authorised and for legitimate reasons.

Police undertook an employment process to address the breaches identified.

The Authority agrees with the employment process undertaken and the outcome Police reached.
