Christchurch senior officer allegedly intimidated a woman involved in a family harm investigation

19 May 2023

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification where it was alleged that a senior officer in Christchurch had attempted to involve himself in a family harm investigation in August 2022. It was alleged the officer may have attempted to intimidate the woman, who he knew, by sending her abusive text messages and entering her property unannounced.

The Authority is satisfied Police conducted a thorough preliminary investigation to determine whether the officer’s action amounted to criminal harassment. Their decision not to charge the officer was appropriate. However, Police were slow to initiate an employment investigation and the officer resigned before it was underway.
