Wellington District: Detainee injured in Masterton custody suite

19 December 2023

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation regarding a notification of an incident where the tip of a detainee’s finger was severed by a cell door.

Police determined no staff were a fault for the injury and there was no mechanical defect with the cell door. Staff were unaware the detainee placed their hand in the cell door at the last second as it was closed which caused the injury.

The Police investigation identified a number of shortcomings in the way staff managed the detainee’s difficult and assaultive behaviour before the injury was sustained. Police determined all staff acted in good-faith and Police implemented a range of measures based on the lessons learned during the investigation.

The Authority agrees with the findings of the investigation and actions taken by police.
