Auckland Police employee convicted after using the Police database inappropriately

4 December 2023

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification that an Auckland Police Crime Reporting Line (CRL) manager had used the Police database inappropriately. The employee had taken screenshots of personal and sensitive information relating to four members of the public and sent them to a friend. The friend then shared the screenshots with members of a private Facebook chat group.

Police conducted an investigation which resulted in the Police employee being charged with accessing the computer system for dishonest purposes. She was convicted and sentenced to 80 hours community service.

Police concluded her actions constituted serious misconduct. While she retained a role with Police, extensive safeguards were put in place to ensure the offending could not occur again.

The Authority agreed that the officer should be charged and that her actions constituted serious misconduct.
