Allegation that Police broke a woman’s arm unproven

7 August 2023

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation that a Police officer in Waikato broke a woman’s arm while restraining her after a fight broke out in a bar in April 2022.

After reviewing CCTV footage of the incident, Police found that the woman appeared to have fallen to the ground twice (once during the eviction of the woman’s associates and once after). There was insufficient evidence that any officer had physically restrained the woman, and the cause of the injury was unclear. Police also found that an officer had twice offered the woman medical assistance for her sore arm, but she declined.

The Authority agrees with the Police’s findings.
