Police officer's decision to pursue a fleeing driver flawed

18 June 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification from Southern District where it was alleged that an officer breached Police policy by continuing to pursue a vehicle when the safety risks outweighed the immediate necessity to apprehend the driver. The Police investigation determined the officer should have abandoned the pursuit at an earlier stage, as the seriousness of the driving offence did not justify the continuation of the pursuit. As a result of their investigation, Police identified learning opportunities for the subject officer involved, to improve their knowledge of best practice and decision-making when managing fleeing driver events.

The Authority is satisfied with how the Police conducted their investigation of this incident and the outcomes reached.
