Attempted suicide while in Police custody in the Central District

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation Police wrongfully arrested a man who later attempted to commit suicide in custody by wrapping clothing around his neck.

Police assessed the man as needing to be carefully monitored while in custody however the investigation found Police did not consistently monitor him as frequently as required by their policy. The police investigation also found the man had been wrongfully arrested for breaching a condition of his bail. These issues were addressed with the staff involved.

The Authority is satisfied with the Police review of this incident and actions taken.
