Indecent assault complaint not proven

10 February 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation that a Police officer indecently assaulted a woman while conducting a drug impairment test in Oamaru in March last year.

The woman complained that a Police patrol had stopped her vehicle three times on the night in question and then returned with her to the Oamaru Police station for the drug test. She said that during the test the officer inappropriately touched her thigh.

The Police investigation established that the three vehicle stops with the woman before going to the Police Station for the drug test were lawful and appropriate, and there was no evidential sufficiency to substantiate the allegation of indecent assault.

The Authority reviewed the Police investigation and agreed with the findings and outcome.
