Officer in the Bay of Plenty uses excessive force on a mentally ill man in custody

17 December 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation an officer used excessive force multiple times on a mentally ill man in custody. Police found as well as using unnecessary and excessive force when moving the man between cells, the officer also failed to complete a report documenting the force he used and did not organise medical attention for a head injury the detained man sustained while in custody.

While no criminal charges were laid, the matter is being dealt with via an employment pathway, and the Authority agrees with the outcome.
