Off duty Police employee convicted of drink driving

11 March 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation involving an off duty Police employee from Counties/Manukau who was stopped at a Police checkpoint in Ohakune and failed the compulsory breath alcohol test. The employee elected to provide a blood sample which returned a blood alcohol level in excess of the legal limit. The employee pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess blood alcohol and was sentenced by the court.

While Police determined the employee's actions were a breach of their Code of Conduct, they also considered the employee's early admission of fault and that their role within Police does not involve driving. The employee received what the Authority considers was an appropriate sanction.
