Prisoners escape from Levin District Court

10 June 2020

On 21st August 2019 three prisoners escaped from Levin District Court. Four prisoners were being led to the police prisoner transport truck by two Police Officers through the Court's sally port. One of the prisoners restrained one of the officers while another activated the emergency roller door release. Three of the prisoners escaped, the other was restrained.

Police investigated and identified a number of factors resulted in the prisoner's escape including a lack of consistent training and induction for staff. Police addressed the issue with the officers and a critical Incident Review made recommendations to minimise the risk of this recurring. The Authority agrees with the outcome.
