Complaint of use of force upon arrest in Waitemata

17 August 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint where it was alleged that Police used excess force during an arrest in Waitemata during February 2019.

Police had been called to a family harm incident and attended the day after the episode had been reported. On arrival they spoke to the parties involved and the male became aggressive towards Police. He was arrested for assaulting one of the officer's present. Force was used during the arrest process to restrain the man. Police investigated and found that the force used was not excessive in the circumstances.

Due to the conflicting accounts by those present the Authority agreed with this outcome.
