Moped rider injured during arrest

22 April 2020

In May 2019, Police notified the Authority of an incident after a person riding a stolen moped on a footpath was injured when the moped collided with patrol cars in Wellington.

A patrol car parked across the footpath for the purpose of stopping the moped. The moped bumped into the patrol car and was struck by a second patrol car attempting to prevent the moped from escaping. The person's foot was trapped under the second patrol car's wheel for a very short period.

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation to determine if the actions of the officers amounted to careless driving causing injury.

Police found that there were no breaches of law or policy by any of the officers.

The Authority determined that the investigation was inadequate because the rider of the moped was not interviewed, the officers were not interviewed and further enquiries that may have provided relevant information for the prosecution process, were not completed.
