Offender attacked cellmate in Manukau District Court cells

24 September 2019

On 6 April 2018, two men were placed in a cell at Manukau District Court. One of the men repeatedly kicked and punched the other, resulting in a fractured eye socket. The offender was arrested and charged by Police.

The Authority directed Police to investigate whether the two men were appropriately evaluated before they were placed in the same cell. The Police investigation found that the assault was not foreseeable and the decision to place the two men in the same cell was not inappropriate. The Authority agreed with the Police findings.
