The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification where a detainee set a fire inside a Police cell at the Hawkes Bay Custody Unit which necessitated evacuation of the cells. A Police investigation into the matter identified both systemic and individual shortcomings. Remedial action was taken and positive systemic changes were implemented to mitigate risks and improve the functioning of the Custody Unit.
