Police Officer from the Waikato District charged with careless driving

21 August 2019

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a notification where a Police Officer from the Waikato District was undertaking urgent duty driving to apprehend a speeding driver. Due to the speed the officer was travelling (172km/hr in a 100km/hr posted speed zone), the officer was not able to stop in time when a member of the public moved into his lane. The two vehicles collided, but there were no injuries.

The officer was charged with dangerous driving and appeared in the Hamilton District Court. The Court found the allegation to be proven but determined it appropriate to discharge the officer without conviction.

The Authority agreed with the disciplinary sanction imposed by Police following an employment investigation.
