A person complained to the Authority after armed Police attended his address in the mistaken belief he had a firearm. While the complainant accepted Police had been operating under an honest mistake, he felt their explanation the following day was unsatisfactory, and he was upset Police had touched his taiaha without permission.
Once approached by the Authority, Police sent the complainant a more thorough explanation for their presence and decision to carry firearms. Police also apologised to the complainant for any disrespect caused by touching his taiaha and agreed to incorporate more training around taiaha and their significance in te ao Māori.
