Auckland City Police remove a formal written warning

1 March 2022

A person complained he was issued a formal written warning for assault which he denied committing. Police did not discuss with the complainant that they were going to issue a warning at the time of the alleged assault. Nor did they note the complainant alleged he was the one who had been assaulted.

The Authority raised this with Police who agreed to review their decision to issue of the formal written warning. The review found there was insufficient evidence of the assault and the complainant had not been spoken to about a formal written warning at the time of the incident. They agreed to remove the formal written warning and update the complainant’s file accordingly.

Discussions were also held with the approving supervisor about the criteria for any future formal warnings.
