Ex-partner alleged couple submitted a false insurance claim

17 February 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a suspected insurance fraud and a complaint about inappropriate use of private data.

The ex-partner of an Eastern District Police officer claimed that, while they were living together, they submitted a false insurance claim for the loss of valuable jewellery. The complainant also alleged that private emails and other information had been submitted to IRD without permission. The allegations were made during an acrimonious separation.

Police conducted a criminal investigation into the false insurance claim and obtained a legal opinion from a Crown Solicitor. This determined that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute either party. Police concluded that no further action should be taken in relation to the use of the complainant's data. Police also addressed the allegations as part of an employment process.

The Authority agreed that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute the officer and accepted the Police decision not to fully investigate the use of the private data. The employment process concluded with an appropriate outcome.
