Allegation of excess use of force and racist language during arrest in Counties Manukau

17 April 2024

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into allegations an officer used excess force and racist language during the arrest of a young person in Counties Manukau in May 2023.

The 15-year-old complainant was driving a stolen car in Takanini and failed to stop when signalled to do so by Police. He alleged that when he was apprehended, a number of officers knelt on his back and one officer pulled his hair and pushed his head into the ground while using racist language towards him.

Police conducted an investigation and found insufficient evidence to support the allegations.

The Authority agrees with the findings of the investigation.
