Police in Northland apologise after arresting a man

12 May 2022

Police arrested a man for disorderly behaviour after a fight outside a bar. The incident was recorded on a body camera by local security, and when the Authority reviewed the footage, we thought there was not enough evidence to support his arrest.

While Police did not charge the man and drove him home, the Authority advised Police the officers acted unreasonably by arresting the man as there was no evidence he was acting inappropriately. In fact, it appeared the man was acting as a peacekeeper during the altercation.

Police apologised to the complainant and explained why they arrested him, which the man appreciated.
