Officer plead guilty to assault in Whanganui

5 October 2021

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation where an officer who had been headbutted by a detainee in the cells at Whanganui Police Station, later kicked the detainee in the leg.

The officer's kick occurred 90 seconds after he had been headbutted and when the detainee was handcuffed and being restrained on the ground. The officer was charged with assault and later pleaded guilty and was discharged without conviction. Police also conducted an employment process that determined the officer's actions were in breach of the Code of Conduct. The officer received an employment sanction which was appropriate.

The Authority agrees with Police actions during the investigation and the outcome.
