The Authority were notified by Police of an incident relating to the use of a taser during an arrest in Otago. After verbal threats of violence and a physical altercation with an individual breaching bail, Police used a taser to contact stun them three times.
Police investigation found that the first taser was justified, and the second two contact stuns were in breach of policy.
The case was not referred to the Authority for twelve months due to an administration error. If Police had referred the matter at the time of incident, the Authority would have conducted an independent investigation. However, on referral the employee had already received remedial training and attended a meeting to address the policy breach. The Authority considers Police took the appropriate remedial action.
