Police in the Waikato apologise for unlawfully retaining property

20 April 2021

A person complained Police failed to return property and cash which had been seized during his arrest.

Following the Authority raising several questions about their actions, Police reviewed the matter and acknowledged they were unlawfully holding property which belonged to the complainant. Police contacted the complainant to apologise and arranged for the property to be returned.

Police also identified there were several people claiming ownership of the seized cash. In situations like this, the question of ownership of the cash is a matter for the Court to decide. Police have now applied to the Court for a decision as to who they should return the cash to.
