Police in Waitemata attend a self-harm incident

7 September 2020

Police responded to a call from a concerned member of the public who saw a woman they suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Police believed the woman may have been at risk of self-harm so searched for her. Police later found her in the backseat of her car, and because she told officers she had not taken an overdose of medication, she was handed over into the care of her family. The family later found she had taken an overdose and raised their concern that the officers did not call an ambulance at the time.

Police have spoken with the family and apologised for how the matter was handled. Police also spoke with the attending officers about how they could have dealt with the incident differently.
