Minor injuries to fleeing driver after short pursuit in Northland

20 October 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into an allegation a Police car was deliberately driven into a fleeing vehicle that had stopped, following a brief pursuit. The fleeing driver was hit by the Police car immediately after stepping out of his vehicle. He briefly lost consciousness but sustained only minor, superficial injuries.

Police determined that the officer in the Police car was travelling too close to the fleeing vehicle and was unable to stop or completely avoid it when the fleeing driver braked suddenly. The driver was hit as the Police car was coming to a standstill and travelling at a relatively low speed. The Authority is satisfied that appropriate steps were taken by Police following an employment investigation into the officer's conduct.

It was also alleged that the officer provided inaccurate information following the incident. The Authority is satisfied that this is not the case and that the scene examination supports the officer's account of events.
