Police pursuit in Canterbury District

16 January 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation after being notified of concerns arising out of a pursuit that occurred in the Canterbury Police District on 23 August 2018. It was alleged that the pursuit was inappropriate due to the time of day and the close proximity of a school.

At the conclusion of an employment investigation Police found that the officers involved should not have commenced a pursuit in the circumstances and that the decision to do so was contrary to Police Fleeing Driver policy. Police also identified deficiencies with the management of events leading up to the pursuit and the coordination of resources. These matters were addressed with the staff involved.

The Authority agrees with the outcome of the Police investigation and the employment sanctions imposed.
