Police employee assaulted prisoner in Waitemata

16 December 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint where it was alleged that in May 2019, a Police employee assaulted a man detained in Police cells. The employee was attempting to fingerprint the detainee who was resisting. The employee was provoked and responded by punching the man in the face numerous times and grabbing him by the throat. The employee was charged with assault, pleaded guilty and was discharged by the court without conviction. A subsequent police employment process determined the employee's actions were unjustified. The Authority accepts the findings and outcome of the police investigations.
