Allegation of an assault on a 17 year old girl in a police patrol vehicle in 1980

17 August 2020

The Authority oversaw a Police investigation into a complaint made in 2019, that in 1980, a 17 year old girl was assaulted by a police officer in a police patrol vehicle.

The complainant had earlier met four off duty Auckland based Police Officers in a pub on the East Coast and accepted an offer of a ride in the police vehicle with the four officers. The complainant alleges the officers were policing an event somewhere on the East Coast near Gisborne. Following an evidential interview with the complainant and an investigation, Police were unable to identify the police officers concerned. Police also determined that further investigation would not identify the officers and there would be insufficient evidence to prosecute.

The Authority reviewed the Police file and agreed with the outcome.
