Woman attempted self-harm while being processed by Police in Canterbury

4 March, 2019

A woman was arrested in Canterbury and while she was being transported to the station, she told the officers she was planning on self-harming. While the officers advised the custodial staff of her comments, they did not stay with her, and while she was waiting to be formally received into the custody unit, she used an item of clothing to try to harm herself. This was noticed immediately and appropriate steps were taken to ensure she was safe.

The Authority worked with Police to ensure involved staff engaged in a formal debrief with senior officers to reconfirm expectations regarding oversight of distressed people.
